Energy cost of maintaining an aquarium?

i live in calif i have a 3 bedroom house i live alone and have 15 aquariums all up and running and my monthly electric bill for the entire house is about 105.00 summer is about 25.00 more when i run the a/c. i never tried to break it down to figure what each tank costs if my electric bill was high like i hear some peoples are across the country i might be more inclined to do so but i think my bill is fair for what i consume.

If you're not looking for precise measurements, (which I think is impossible since there are factors that are changing that you are probably un-aware of), I would go with the on-off duty cycle method as well.

Keep an eye on the heater light, and see how long the light stays on, within one hour. You can calculate from there.

The winter months will require more if your home is not as heated.

What I've noticed after keeping Discus that requires high temps is that the larger the delta temp, the faster it drops, or increases. It's only when the temp is a few degrees off, that it takes a long time to stabilize.

the Kill-a-watt meter counts kWh, so it takes time into account.

This is a good point, thanks for reminding me! :)

When I first got my 30G tank I saw an immediate hike in my electrict bill by a little over $30/month (150W heater, and lights on a 10 hour timer) I have an Eclipse III Hood...this was back in 2005-ish

Do you guys know if the stealth heaters suck up a lot of energy?

A 200w heater is a 200w heater (or whatever wattage)...all of them should convert electricity into heat with pretty much the same efficiency, if they are submerged. The greatest variation among different brands is durability.
