I am a beginner saltwater aquarist but I have a bachelors in fisheries science so I have some knowledge. My question is about live rock in an aquarium. I know that is nesscary and is and excellent natural filtration system but I worry about how it is obtained... is it being harvested from life reefs? How much damage does the harvesting do? I have heard that it is illegal in Europe, so how do they maintain thier tanks?

And as for fish and corals is ther any go way to guarantee they are being harvested by sustainable means?

Go to Garf dot com. As far as Live rock and corals go, they preach what they teach and that is, building a pseudo reef that is reef smart.

On the fish and corals one such way is only getting aquacultured specimens, especially from local reefers and vendors that are active with MACNA.

I'd also consider buying live rock from someone tearing down their tank to be a good way to recycle what is already out and about but that might not be enough for what you're trying to accomplish.

Some make their own live rock. You'd probably have to throw in a few pieces of real rock to seed the life, but it can be done.
