im not trying to sound stupid but can someone tell me why the water in my 30g tank is evaporating so quickly?(and maybe how i could try to prevent it a little) there are no fish in the tank and it has a hood. the temp is between 75-78 degrees. i filled up the tank all the way yesterday and now the water level had dropped 31/2 inches. is this normal?

no, that is not normal. my 20g has some large gaps on the hood and it still only drops 1/4" a week from evaporation. does the hood cover the entier top of the tank? is there a lot of surface agitation?

you may also want to check the tanks for leaks i would say evaporation of that magnitude is not normal i have 4tanks up and running right now and i lose the most from my acrylic tank only because i dont have the proper lid and i still only lose about and inch of water a week.

it covers everywhere except the left back corner because that is where the filters are. there is also a small slit on the right hand side for the heater....

I have a huge amount of surface area in my tank, and it wouldn't drop that far down in a week!

I think you have a leak somewhere. Either that, or you have an animal in the house who has been very thirsty.

i have checked all the sides and up under the tank and there is not one drop of moisture...what im thinking is that maybe one of my hob filters is over flowing (but only sometimes). i jsut filled the tank up with water and i am going to try to see how long it will take for it to go back down...i also adjusted the filter

I lose a gallon a day out of some of my tanks that are not "fully" enclosed (2" gap at the back of the canopy glass), especially the ones with HOB filters.

It's winter and the house is pretty dry. Water *can* evaoporate that fast.

I'm finding that water is evaporating more rapidly during the dry winter months.

Also, my cats help lower the water level--they think the HOB is a drinking fountain. Do you have cats or dogs who could be taking a sip?

i caught my cat balanced between the arm of the couch and the top of the tank drinking out of the outflow for the HOB...
