I again agree with you nursie. Another interesting fact is that we actually have 75% of the genetic makeup in common with dogs.

Since I am partially Native American, I believe that humans and animals are all brothers in some way or another, we just have to figure out how tpo treat eachother better though. Why wouldn't we have all these traits in common with certain groups of animals if they did not at one time contribute to our developement?

Another thing that all mammals share is the Reptillian Brain. It is located in the center of the brain, and controls the most primal of behaviors such as emotions, grooming, the abilitiy to solve puzzles, looking in the mirror, and certain other habits. It is proof that mammals evolved from reptiles shortly after the impact that caused the great extinction of many dinosuars. While our own origins are still a bit confusing, this is one of the clues we are able to look to when we attempt to figure it all out.

Actually the 1st mammals appeared about 200 million years ago...not after the great dinosaur extinction around 64-65 million years ago. But these mammals did evolve from a certain class of ancient reptile. So all mammals do have a common ancestor and are related genetically as such.

:fairy: Pleaese remember to keep this thread mellow. This is a discussion of possibilities. It is not a discussion to prove anyone right or wrong. So far you guys have kept it behind the line and I apreciate that, so lets keep it that way. :)

:sim: Slip cant stay out of these threads no matter how many times he tries to not hit the "enter" button

BTW: If we did evolve from chimps (primates), why didnt all of us evolve and why are there still primates? I just have to ask.
Dale, thank you so much for this concession. If we keep this civil, I believe we can turn over some interesting rocks.

TONO, did you read one of my first posts in this thread? I was raised Southern Baptist and believed in God for the majority of my life.

I'm willing to bet I know more of the Bible than you do. So let's go there.

I have no doubt you do I'm just stating what usually turns people off about chritianity. I did not read all of your post so I did not realize where you were coming from, sorry.

You guys it takes an extreme amount effort to gather all the information for an argument. So I may not post for a few days, but I'll try and answer all of your questions.

Thanks for all those links Slip, although I'd like to see more information about how these conclusions were reached. And I would like to point out that in every case mentioned as evolution it was still contained. I mean the wasp may evolve into another species of wasp, but it did not evolve into a bird, or bat , etc. In my opinion this is still microevolution. I'll continue to research on my own 'cause this thread is getting too hot for my taste. I don't enjoy a thread as much when I have to absorb so much emotion from each post. I'm out of the kitchen now. Happy swimming :dive2:

For the very same reason that there are still single celled organisms. There is still a niche on this earth that they can take advantage of more efficiently than any other living thing.

Don't try to picture evolution as a linear event, consider it more of a family tree where similar organisms have common ancestors. This is also why "missing links" are missing. In many instances, due to an environmental event the habitat of a given organism will change. If this habitat is different, it will favor organisms that are slightly different than those originally inhabiting a certain niche. The slightly different organisms have a higher survival rate b/c they are able to outcompete others in the same niche, and eventually due to their higher fecundity rates and more effiecient body plans they simply replace the original organisms by outcompeting them. Because this process takes so long, a human wouldn't even be able to see it happening in higher life forms.

Consider this poor analogy if you will. Take a fork and look only at the tips of the tines. The rest of the fork remains out of sight. Those tips represent different species. The handle, where they all diverged from, is no longer around; it's the "missing link" to the tines.

Well to expand on my earlier answer about chimps.

They have and are evolving just like we are.

I have a book that says our ancestors split off into two groups at one time. One side became gorillas, the other side became us and chimps. Plus there was another animal that the chimps and our ancestors also became. Something suprising to me. I think it was the Lemur.

So chimps and lemurs(I'm pretty sure it was the Lemur) are closer related to us than gorillas.

As a side note, chimps have evolved so well that they are far more effective hunters than lions. They just don't hunt as much.

Lions average about 1 kill out of 5 or so.

Chimps are almost always successful in their attempts. They'll get worked up in a frenzy, start racing around the trees, screaming and shaking the branches, freak out a monkey so bad it'll panic and make mistakes. Then they take it down and eat it.

Anyway, to think that we are the pinnacle of evolution, and all animals are striving to become big brained creatures is false.

The burden of sustaining such a large brain as ours is hardly ever attempted. Put a human sized brain in a Salmon and come back a million years later. The Salmon will have shrunk the brain down to somewhere around it's original size. It simply cannot use a brain that big. It would actually be detremental and cost too much in resources to it.
