I have heard it both ways VF, do you know of anyone who has raised CG's on live food diet side by side with others raised solely on a balanced prepared food diet? I am not aware of this being done, but I would be interested in seeing the results if it is out there..

Pogiebate- how do you feel about roaches? Tropical roaches are a great substitute for crickets (silent and nearly odorless) and are easy to breed (just ask Vicious). If you are willing to go with them instead you could keep a wide array of insectivorous lizards, frogs, etc. in that tank.

Lol, I was going to ask the OP this but I figured if they're afraid of crickets then they have to be even more afraid of roaches. B. dubia are where it's at! Like mentioned, odorless, quite, can't climb glass, fly or infest your house. Plus they'll eat pretty much anything and give birth to live young so you don't have to incubate egg cultures or move babies to a separate enclosure.

Yes, a member on MFK has experimented with the diets of both R.ciliatus and R. auriculatus. He concluded that they do best with a varied diet. He also has bred both species for sometime.

I think it's fine to feed them the crested diet but they should also have dusted crickets or roaches included as well.

So are you talking those hissing kind you see in the pet store? I'm guessing not. Those are kind of expensive to feed to another critter.

Crickets are just a creepy nasty ugly thing! I'm not afraid of those either, there is just something about them I really hate :yuck:

They're smaller than hissers, comparable in size to crickets. They're cheap and easy to breed, so if you're willing to set up a little breeding tank you can have plenty of bugs to feed whatever animals you settle on, and can probably sell the extra to your LFS.

Yep, those are the guys. I picked up about 50 babies in March for $15 and they started breeding about 2 months ago. I'm just starting to feed them off to my geckos along with some of the extra adult males to my pyxie frog.

I keep mine in a 10 gallon aquarium with a heating pad under it. They breed faster when kept at warmer temps between 85-95˚F. I'll probably switch them over to a rubbermaid tub soon. I've even seen people use a plastic trash can with a lid to breed them in.

You can breed these guys too, they just reproduce a little slower. Plus they're more territorial with each other and can climb glass.
