Experience or Logic

Now...reread this entire thread while imagining Spock from Star Trek narrating every word.

i'll put it like this.

before you start your fish hobby, you need KNOWLEDGE (assuming you're totally new).

after you start your fish hobby, you get EXPERIENCE which adds to your KNOWLEDGE.

with your EXPERIENCE(like losing a fish 3 times) and KNOWLEDGE (like your fish may need more oxygen) you figure out things like what causes the problem (like Oxygen level going down) and this and that and other stuff.

then in order to counter such problems you use KNOWLEDGE (like your type of fish is a heavy oxygen consumer and water movement creates and oxygen exchange) and LOGIC (like adding an aeration tube and how to create water movements) to solve such problem.

definately headache material. need to meditate on all the previous answers. ;) :D

i say both.

experience is great but not everyone has it.

same for logic, you need logic to reason things thru.

with experience you might recognize a problem immediately. but with logic you can reason out the best course of action, and then gain more experience dealing with it........

yup, definately headache material. :D

This is one of those questions that assumes an either/or when none is needed. Which is better for a carpenter, a hammer or a saw? They're both tools and, used well, they each have their place. When one is inadequate, the other (hopefully) bridges the gap.

Let me simpify if i can-Events=Research=Knowledge=Logic=Trial and Error=Experience

Add them together, you will get good fish keeping.

Well from all the research I have done in the past I have learned that there is no such thing as logic in this hobby. It is all based on experience. Beginners ask their LFS questions and whatever EXPERIENCE that person has is what that beginner is going to learn from. Being that people do different things with their tanks its all on whatever you experience while keeping fish. You get your basis on the hobby with your first tank and learn from reading but you really don't get a grasp of something until it happens to you. At least that's the way I am. I really didn't know what a mouth fungus or why a fish looks bloated and has trouble swimming was by reading something. I got a good basis from reading and researching but you are still going to lose fish because you did not notice these things. I am sure all of us did as beginners. I guess it really depends on the individual person.

I just wanted to make sure we all are on the same sheet of music. I believe you meant to say "beforehand research = theory."

Theory= speculation; hypothesis to explain something; rules or knowledge of an art as distinguished from practice.

Theology= the science of God and divine things: divinity.

-Taken from Websters-

Definately they are both necessary to protect and properly care for your fish. Practicing your "knowledge" creates experience; experience creates "knowledge".
