Experience with Hang On Tank Magnum Canister Filter

fluval 104 is now called fluval 105 not much is different in them except the impellor so what ever you read about a 105 pretty much applies to a 104.

easy mod i do

i have modded most of my hot magnums return tubes since i like them a bit longer then the oem one. i just sawed off the bottom of the retund tube where it curves at the bottom so i am left with a straight tube cut BELOW swivel joint - i went to the local home depot bought some black plastic tubing the size need to tighty slide up on the sawed off part of the tube and then make it whatever lenght you want it to be then i slide a fluval 405 return piece into the end of the added piece of tubing and your done and your able to move the exhaust in any direction with the swivel joint on the oem return tube. works perfect and its simple. takes maybe 3 minutes to do and your done and ready to turn the filter on. you can get fluval 405 return spouts on ebay for 1.98 + 4.95 shipping and any other parts you buy from the guy ships in the same box free so you only pay shipping for 1 item sweet deal I have bought numerous fluval returns from him. and he ships same day bought takes me 2 days to get a order from him.

OP asked (I think) about co2 with the hot magnum... I tried to stick airline hose from my diy co2 generator into the intake, and within an hour the filter was gurgling and spurting, like it had huge air bubbles in it. Reset it and tried again...same thing. Now I just am using a powerhead with a sponge to disperse the co2.

Well, thanks SMinNC for you detailed paragraphs! About the Co2 thing, thats okay, I was planning on just dealing with that by using a glass diffuser. I heard that should work. For the filters, I AM just going to have to decide. Only one for the start off will be good for me. Like SMinNC said, I don't need MANY from the start.

I know I'm loading you guys with filters, but I saw a Marineland c-160 on ebay for $60 new, For about only $10 more, I could just get one of thoes. Are they better than my other choices? If so, I'll probably go with that.

Any name brand (non-clone) canister filter that is in like new or very good condition that you can get for 50-75% below retail is a great buy no matter what. If your trying to get the most for your money fast, target a steal deal on any of the major brands, the bigger the capacity the better.

i have the marineland C-360 on my 72 gal.

i like it alot! they have good flow, great fltration! and they are easy to set up!

only problems are, the trays have to snap in, if you dont snap them in correctly they will not sit level, and your cover will not go on. the out put tube seems the same as the magnums but i havent had a problem with mine. when turning the filter on after cleaning, press the priming button after the filter is plugged in, this gets rid of the air in the canister and makes it quieter and helps cool the motor!

overall, i think it is a great canister and if you can get it for 60 bucks i say get it!
