Experience with Hydrocotyle (Marsh Penny/Water Pennywort)

Attached are photos- one in the aquarium one out.

I deliberately started with just a small a few two leafed sample in aquarium so there isn't much to see yet... there are lots of little leaves growing...

SOMETHING (my Bridgesii I suspect since I've seen them sniffing around it alot) seem to think the Hydrocotyle is lunch... they leave my other plants but they seem to snip the stems off these from the base.

It's either them or Rams or Bladders... No other plant (and I've got a dozen species in there) have been touched by any of the snails.

They are growing- sending out new leaves in the aquarium... in just a week I've seen new leaves appear... hard to photograph in the aquarium since the leaves are so shiny.

In the aquarium it seems to send out runners in one line like you described...

In my fake swamp it seems to send out runners in multiple directions... it could just be because I picked the tinyest offshoots to put in the aquarium though.

Well... it's been a month...

Not much is left of it in the tank... Some bits have grown nicely... Not that it doesn't seem to thrive in tank conditions- but that it seems to fall victim to the Briggs.

My Briggs don't touch any other plant in the tank but everyonce in a while they'll snap the stem of these plants... Not sure why- they don't seem to be eating it- just breaking it down biting through the stem at the base. I've only witnessed this once- but most of the old leaves- and most of the new leaves that started growing after planting have all been cut down at the base.

It's a pretty plant- looked nice before it was attacked... I may just keep harvesting more since it's growing so rampant in a pot outside... but I don't recommend it if you have snails... even non-plant eating snails.

I know Briggs (and other non-plant eating snails) will eat duckweed... I also know that H. Umbellata is used by some people in salads (member of the carrot family... I keep meaning to try a leaf)- It probably has a nice taste to it and easy to digest.

Maybe they are trying to eat it but in trying to eat it they snap it in half.

Or maybe the stems are starting to rot in places in a way I can't see and that attracts the snails... Looks really healthy though (what hasn't been attacked that is).

It is odd.

I can't get my brazilian pennywort to stay planted. Either the stems break, or it uproots. I eventually gave up, and I just let it be a floater. Now, it is thriving.

I'll try to float some then... see how that works... I've been fishing out the leaves and stems the snails have been breaking off.

BTW... just tried a leaf (from the outside pot- not the fishtank)... tastes like parsley - maybe raddish without the heat. Not bad but I'm probably not going to eat any more of it.
