I've been thinking about picking up an extra filter to support all the fish I have in my tank. I haven't really had a problem with the filter I have, I would just feel more secure myself if I added another filter on to what I already have. Anyone have any suggestions as to what type of filter I should get? I'd prefer it to be on the lower end of the price range, if at all possible.

well what size tank do you have, how many and what kind of fish, and how often do you do water changes and what percentage each time?

check my sig

I do about a 35% water change 1-2 times a week

cool, I think I'll probably just pick up a penguin 100 tomorrow, unless anyone has any other suggestions.

ended up picking up a whisper 10, so i'm filtering an extra 90 gallons an hour, tank cycles 10.75 times an hour now :D

is there such thing as TOO MUCH filtration??

Keep in mind that the flow rating on aquarium filters and pumps are generally calibrated with no media and zero pump head. As soon as you put media in the filter the flow rate is reduced, but comparing the nominal flow rate to nominal tank volume, 8-10X tank volume per hour is a fine guideline to use with HOB filters.

No, but you can produce too much current for your aquarium inhabitants.

I've got an Aqua Clear 500 and a Penguin 350 running on my 55g, and no "dead spots" in the tank. It makes it easier to keep the sand clean if nothing settles on it. Do make sure that your fish aren't troubled by the current (some actually prefer it).

how can you tell if they are bothered by the current?
