Hello,
So i'd just like to say first that this is not my fish- and i would never let it go this bad. This was a betta from a friend that i rescued today.

So i have done 100% water change and put him in a larger bowl. If you look at the picture he seems dead. Well he is very active and trying to swim. Unfortunetly since he has no fins he can't get up very far and can't stay up. it's quite sad. I would give up except he is so alive.

So, i want to pull out the big guns. I have a fungus eliminator that also treats fin rot. I'm going to add aquarium salt. My question is about the tetracycline. I have a Gel food medication form (by gel tek). Since he can't swim i can't soak his food in the gel because the food will float ( i tried).

how can i get him to eat it? do you think he could pull out of it or is it too far gone?

suggestions? any are welcome!

THANKS EVERYONE!!!

First off, lower the water level... He must get to the top to breathe... Keep the water clean and continue to treat... He has probably gone too far, but you may get lucky... Try Kanamycin... The fish dont have to eat it to benefit from the antibiotics...

thanks for the suggetions. i have lowered the water level and put him in a huge wide bowl (yes i know that's not ok for betta but it's temporary ;). Ironically he seemed more active when he was in the tall tank. He only moves when i check to see that he is alive. Hopefully he is coming up to breathe when i'm not there. I can't get him to eat except for fzn brine shrimp that floats the the bottom.

is kanamycin strong enough to kill the fin rot bacteria? research seemed to point to tetramycin

any ideas on betta food that sinks?

Pretty much any betta pellet food will sink after just a few moments of floating. (I have used HBH "Betta Bites" and Aqua Culture "Betta Pellet Food.")

I sure hope he pulls through.

TheMightQueenPixie has a *lot* of experience with bettas -- she raises and breeds them. She's also the resident expert on a couple of boards.

If she says Kanamycin, then get that.

Haha thanks Roan, i didn't know.

Kanamycin is effective for internal infections... Not all, but most it will put a dent in... I thought you were also trying to treat for an internal infection (tetracyclin via food)...It would not be a big stretch of the immagination to assume that there is possible septicemia...Personally, I dont think the fish looks "septic", but it you dont get that external infection sorted out it is possible... Personally, when it comes to external bacterial issues, it would go with Maracyn2.... LOTS of regualar water changes and proper dosage should fix it...

Sorry to confuse you. I got the tetracyclin gel food for another fish with fin rot- i never considered it would help more with internal bacteria.... sorry off subject

In the long run isn't kanamycin stronger that Maracyn2? I really want to hit it hard since the fin rot is so severe. I'll definetly continue regular water changes.

Now he won't eat

Ok so fishy ain't doing so hot. Over the last 24rs i have gotten him to get once, when i brought him home. Now he won't eat- and i'm trying brine shrimp and peas as well.

What can i do?

i attached more pictures of him from today. currently he is in a small cup so i can temp him to eat. not working

the first picture, the blurry part on the body is his fin flapping when i took the shot. Notice the ends of the anal fin

the second picture shows another full body shot, sorry it's blurry
