FWIW, it uses less energy,and there is less wear and tear on your AC unit if you do not let the temp fluctuate too much.

Water temp is always lower than air temp due to evaporation taking energy from the tank.
Nonetheless it is something you need to watch. Electronic chillers just arn't cost affective for most of us.- so you need to aim for evaporation- as said above- leave the lid off if you can- aim a fan at the water if you can... aim to get as much water evaporating from you tank as possible as that will lower temperatures.
People talk about floating bottles of ice. That's unsightly and a pain in the neck to do if you live in an area with long summers. (OK if you're just in a short-summer area).
May be too late now, but if you're in a warm climate with an aquarium sat in a room that gets hot for much of the year- plan fish that tolerate warmer temperatures.

I'm not sure if anyone has said this yet but freezing water bottles would work and dropping them before you leave.
i have a 60g planted tank and so instead of lights off, i've cycled to lights on at night and off during the day.
but also during the day: lid off, bubbler and fans.
i'm in the san fernando valley (l.a.) and it's 100's these days. the tank is in an enclosed patio that doesn't get direct light, but has no air conditioning- so i have no choice regarding a/c.
it's been +-82. so far so good.
i may get a (used) fluval canister filter and let that live in a bucket of ice water and see how that goes - IF it gets even hotter.

i just freeze 2 liter bottles, and plop them in to drop the temps down some before the hott of the day comes and it helps alot
