I would actually break down the tank and then re-establish and re-cycle it if you think that there is a large chance of your puffers having died from parasites.

Having spent so long getting the tank cycled that would be a last resort for me. I also think that the tank is just beginning to show signs of age, and it would take time to replace all of the beneficial life forms in the tank.

Also, given that any new puffers might come with their own parasites, might that not be two months effort for nothing?

I don't know if it was a parasite(s), that is my inexperienced guess. If it was, could I not treat the whole tank with something (?) to remove them before adding fish?

I know that that would be a last resort...I'm not sure with what you could treat the water that wouldn't kill off the bacteria anyway...

It might be two months worth of effort for nothing, if that's how you wish to look at it. I would see it as doing my best to not get my fish sick, but it really depends on your point of view and level of patience.

Please do not take this as a criticism of your personality or anything like that. I am generally impatient when it comes to life, and I am very pessimistic, so I would probably see it the same way.

breaking the tank down is a bit extreme. I'd be willing to bet the gil damage is what did the puffers in. besides, if there were parasites, wouldn't they need a host? and now that there are no hosts, the parasites will simply die. plus if you spike the tank with ammonia, that would kill off any other unwanteds....

breaking down the tank, imo, would do more harm than good.

Actually, fishless cycling only takes about 10 days... or a few hours with Bio-Spira.

Not too sure if we can get BioSpira here, I've never seen it at the LFS (but then again, I've never looked). I thought there were some issues with getting it shipped? Might be wrong...

Seems like I need ammonia regardless. I just need to resist the pull of the puffers for a few more days.....

Thanks for the advice all.

Ade.

I guess that our government in the States won't let us export Bio-Spira, so you'd need to wait until either that changes or Marineland sets up a series of labs in the U.K.
