Im still investigating the idea that stunting is related to phosphates. As phosphates are known to inhibit calcification.

Plecos don't stunt in 10 gallons because they are not active fish, IE they don't need as much room as most other fish of their size... Mind you it is still better to give them as large a tank as possible.
