I agree with BFM on this one, boiling rocks can end badly. The air inside the stone can't escape when it expands and KABOOM...

Ooh, okay. I'll just soak them for a week and hopefully they will be ready for my tank by then. Thanks BFM and Bally for possibly saving my kitchen :thm:

Rescape, New light + P. Taeniatus addition

During a trip to the LFS I bought a new light for the 35g. It is still a 'low-light' setup, having 60w now. The bulbs are white and pink and the colours in the tank are looking much better. It is much nicer being able to see the whole tank as the other light was too short and dimmed off towards the sides of the tank.

I've also rescaped the 35g (surprise, surprise) to give a more natural feel to it. Its obviously not ready but I've got the new rocks soaking (not boiling) and I will also need to get some more bigger bits of driftwood to add to the hardscape.

I captured a few photos with the new light for you to view so you can get an idea of the new colours that this light has given the environment..

The Java Fern has begun to get a few holes in it, which is actually a good thing because it means that it is about to grow new leaves. I really like Java fern and was considering tying some variants like Windelov or Needle leaf to a chopstick and growing them like Que has shown us (Reference here).

I was actually considering selling the angelfish too. They are getting a bit common and even some guests that know nothing about fish know that it's an angel. Plus they act bossy and get pretty big.

I went to pick up some Pelvicachromis Taeniatus 'Lobe' fry today too. I got a m/f pair and I'm hoping they will grow up together and breed. It's looking good so far, that female is constantly following the male around the tank and they're huddling behind the driftwood together. Unfortunately the lighting in this tank isn't great so I could only get these crappy photos that really don't do these pretty fish justice..

They're living in the 25g for the moment, I originally put them in the 14g (in my bedroom so I can keep a better eye on them) but I noticed my betta was flaring at them, he's never flared before so I quickly scooped them out and into the 25g. I will be moving them to the 35g in the lounge when they're enough to survive with the angels.

During the trip to the LFS, I noticed the Dario Dario (Scarlet Badis) that they had for sale, I thought they were awesome. Tiny, yet so colourful and interesting. I am considering getting a few of them for the 25g when is more heavily planted.

February 1st - Molly fry

After a long (somewhat 4 months) gestation period my black molly FINALLY popped! The father is most probably my gold molly, though I thought she was pregnant when I bought her from the store. Anyway, all of the babies are calico (mixed black + gold) and are really cool. I managed to catch 10 of them, they're all that I could find. If there are any more I'll put em in the net with it's siblings.

As you may have guessed, I am excited. Yeah, it's not that amazing as they're 'only livebearers' but I don't actually get fry very much, even though I've always had them and they're always pregnant. I lost my other gold female when she was very big to a possible kribensis attack. So I was thinking that I may have to get a few more mollies but... oh and they're in a sift hanging over the 25g :).

Cherry Barbs Possibly Spawning?

There is a possibility that the 5 cherry barbs in the 14g are preparing to spawn. I have noticed that the females bellys are becoming extra round and they look as though they have eggs. I read that they breed after lights out in the evening, so hopefully when I wake up tomorrow the eggs will be laid (it is 11:39pm now). There is 1 very happy male and 4 females. The tank is relatively heavily planted but the plant will need to fill out more before I can call it 'heavily planted', but hopefully there are enough plants for a few fry to survive under.

It's funny that my Cherry Barbs have decided to spawn just after the mollies had fry, maybe it's breeding season.
