I was wondering what anyone has to say about keeping fan sponges in a reef tank - I've seen them around on websites and LFS and such but haven't found any posts from people who have them. Difficult, easy, pretty addition or pointless money drain? I just think they add an interesting element to a reef tank...

very hard to keep, air bubbles will kill them they cant touch air...and most stores and shippers allow them to, need constant food source so dont live long unless in a mature food rich aquarium, i would wait tell the aquarium is a year or 2 old before considering one. ive had my finger sponge forever but then it and my ear sponge got bubbles in the them and the finger died and the ear is just hanging on.
