Fancy Goldfish weird behavior

I disagree 30 gallons is enough.
if you had one, that is.

back to the subject is there any way to correct this swim bladder disease is this likley what this is?
like they said before, massive water changes might help, maybe salt, I don't know. look it up to find out just what kind of swim bladder disorder you fish has.

When and how much was your last water change?
What do you feed them?

If its swim bladder, she will act drunk, like she cant stay upright or doesnt have control. Like I said, if it is SB, and you catch it early, you might be able to remedy it with multiple, massive water changes. SB is caused by bad water conditions and/or improper diet.

Anything else weird going on in your tank?

I had 2 in a 30 gallon and can agree that it is ok for 2 fancies but that's with a condition. You MUST be religious on your water changes and on top of your water chemistry because when things go bad, they go bad quick. It can work but it just takes work so a 40 gallon and up is really a better choice but not the only one.

On with this fish. More than likely, it is swim bladder disease which is sometimes difficult to treat. Sometimes it can be helped as mentioned but sometimes it is too late. Have you checked the water levels on the tank? If you are feeding these fish flake food, that is the problem. Goldfish gulp too much air when gulping at the surface for food resulting in this swim bladder issue (some times). You'll need to soak the flakes and let them fall when soaked before feeding OR get them sinking pellets.

thanks dangerdoll I have been reading articles on swim bladder and have come to the conclusion that is indeed what it is. I have been feeding floating pellets to them actually for a long time with no problems seems like it became a problem I will try feeding them some peas or some other greens maybe that will fix it, hopefully. I read it can be corrected but may be permanent. as far as water I never let my nitrates get over 20 in any of my tanks I turn the volume over in the 20 gallon 12 times an hour 50% weekly water changes actually every 5-7 days as well as rinse the filters in tank water.

Fancy female ok! When I got home today she was displaying normal behavior swimming around like nothing was ever wrong. actually the male seemed happier as well I think she is fine now and I will pay a little more attention to what I feed them Thanks for the help.

Hi Guys
can any body tell me the difference b/w male and females of common goldfish??

I know its sorted but feeding a varied diet helps fish out a lot. Dont feed food that floats on the surface as they can gulp air. Try sinking granules and give them daphnia and bloodworm on occasions and some orange. Theres lots of food goldies can eat and the tougher ones like zucchini can be lightly boiled.

If the fish floats again try starving for 3 days and then for another three days feed nothing but frozen peas that have been boiled, husked and squashed.
Doing lots of water changes wont really help as high nitrates can also be a problem, as can deep water.
If a fish gets SB try lowering the water to half way to ease it.

Bacterial infections can also stop the SB from either deflating which makes the fish float or from inflating, which keeps the fish on the bottom. Nothing much but feeding a medicated food such as medigold or metromeds can help.

Sometimes a neurological disorder can affect the fish. Hard to explain but if the fish forgets to keep itself upright, such as when its sleeping then the fish can become unbalanced.

Hope that helps.

As for sexing fish, its not really possible until the fish is sexually mature at around 3 years or its quite big already.

Females will fatten up around the abdomen and the males will be thinner and sleeker and get little bumps on the gills and front fins called tubercles. This can sometimes be confused with ick.

Some people can spot a female fish by her vent being slightly out and the male being in.
