Thank You everyone for your kind words!! I am not expecting them to make it as this is my first time with these fry and as Msjinkxd said--they are notoriously difficult to raise as they are lazy grazers and will often starve while lying right next to the food.
Rach--how do I make the painted rocks? Just mix up a batch of spirulina with gelatin--do I add egg whites and let them sit out in the sun? It is a great idea!!
You could probably try a few methods, one would be to use egg white and paint the rock then sprinkle the spirulina powder onto it and let it dry. Another would be to mix the spirulina powder into the heated gelatin/water mix then paint it on the rock and let it set up in the fridge for a few hours. This way the farlo can graze on the rock for its nutrition. They are not known for being easy to feed, I know that my subadult farlos ignore prepared foods even if they are right next to them and prefer to just graze on hardscape and plants, this may be a way to make sure food is available to them.
Do you think I can paint it on the rings used for filters? They are small and smooth so no mouth cuts when they eat and the rings can be easily placed into the netting where the farlowellas are. I also have tons of them and only a few smooth rocks. I figure the rings would be easy to remove as well. Or should I use something like a lava rock with holes in them?
Thanks TwoTankAmin!! Great photo!!! I sure have plenty of those around! Are those rocks in the net to hold it down from the frame?
Also, On another note: I spotted an unusual Farlowella so I bought it. It has three scutes and the absolutely longest tail spines I have ever seen on a Farlo. Any guesses? I haven't posted on planet catfish yet--just thought I'd ask.....It is very cool for sure and looks as though it may be getting very plump and is hanging around my male a lot. The male keeps pushing her away and is fanning the spot where the eggs used to be :headshake2:. I wonder when he will realize that the eggs are gone.
