It happens. He was a Flying Fox. Great fish, favoriate fish. I suppose I had him about 3 years.

Anyhow, is there something I should test for/look for or do to the tank in response to the most unfortunate of events? Obviously I'll check the water params. There's been no modifications to the tank in a year; just water changes and gravel vacuuming.

This tank has two gold barbs, two cherry barbs, and one CAE remaining.

Edit: Guess I'm not thinking clearly. So, my wife's all like "Let's take everything out and clean, super vacuum up everything, change 50% or more of the water, stuff like that. I'm wondering if that's necessary or is there something else to do. Maybe the fish was just getting old or something.

Could have been age or the CAE may have decided to go off on it...

Test water for everything in the API master kit to see that nothing's amiss, regular water change ASAP to "get the stink out" (if nothing else).

I agree with squakbert also.

I wouldnt sterilize the tank b/c a 3yr old fish died.

But it doesnt hurt to double check ur params and do a extra water change.

I agree, testing and a good sized water change. If the rest of your fish look healthy and exhibit normal behaviour there is no reason to tear up the entire tank.

How well do maintain ? If good then NO! .
SORRY TO HERE ABOUT THE LOSS

I'll echo it... Terribly sorry for your loss.

Check the usual parameters, do a usual water change. If it wasn't old age, t's probably the CAE.
