Can I assume it's ok to feed my bettas little gnats that come in the house. They are black and really tiny. If you barely touch them, they smoosh. I dropped a newly dead one into the tank last night and my betta loved it....so I gave him 4 or 5 more. I assume this is ok?

Sure...they would chomp any fly that landed on the water in the wild. I used to feed my Oscars live flies if I caught any!

I feed whatever gnats/blackflies I find to my fish, and most any bugs that are small enough.

Well, I feed the Hikari betta food on a regular basis and blood worms occasionally.

I plan to let a few mosquito larva hatch in a bowl on the deck this summer for them. (In a VERY controlled manner!)

We also get these awful little tiny nocturnal green leafhoppers that can fit thru the window screen later in the season. I'd be thrilled to toss them in the fish tank!

Will the guppies like these little treats too?

Sure...guppies are closely related to mosquito fish...they'll eat small insects for sure. What have you got against small green leafhoppers? :)

Small green leafhoppers, like all leafhoppers, have a piercing and sucking mouth part as they suck juices from plants. They love to taste what ever they land on to see if it contains edible juices and they often land on ME! The little suckers hurt! We get them by the hundreds!

Just be sure that none of your neighbors are spraying pesticides outside. You could be feeding your fish contaminated bugs.

I usually throw in any small bugs into my 10G betta tank. I just recently threw in a silverfish in there. He tore it in half and left it afloat. Now, I'm too disgusted to put my hand in the water. I kinda regret doing that now :-(
