Feeding fish spinach

I have fed many veggies & fruit to my fish over the years. Most like raw, others slightly cooked or zapped. What fish are you feeding? Some are vey messy & should only be offered right before a water change...banana & broccoli for 2 IME.

Many of my (favorite fish) loaches like romaine, zucchini & thawed frozen peas. Spinach I offered more than a few times but not the most favored veg. I'd say romaine for loaches; zucchini for most plecos. But it doesn't hurt to try any...as long as you remove leftovers in, say, less than 24 hours. Slightly cooked (or zapped) yams can be popular too. A fork, spoon or table knife can help to sink them.

What kind of pleco? Some like the green part of zucchini, some eat all. My best technique for zuc is a long vertical slice, kinda half green/half white & let them decide. Raw seems to work best in a heated tank, if it likes softer squash it'll get there in several hours or overnight.

Many barbs do eat some veg or at least graze on tank plants & their fauna. Try cooked frozen peas but just squish out the pea "guts" not the outer "shell" part. Tetras "might" try peas, it won't hurt to try...but like I said remove leftovers.

Thanks for the info!

I have glofish-tetras, barbs and pleco (just starting out)

Loaches are cool. :)
I would just start with a small thin slice and rubberband it to a small rock to sink it. Depnding on the size of the Pleco of course, but for smaller ones, small round slice will last several days.

When feeding spinach it should only be a treat since it has calcium-blockers. Other good fruits and veggies to try are pepper insides, celery, asparagus, cucumber, pomegranate, mango, papaya, collard greens, among others.

Since each omnivore is different they will favor different ones, for instance my Synspilum cichlid loves anything with seeds or small segments like raspberry or blackberry as well as a much favored zucchini , however my Plecos seem to prefer zucchini also, but as well as romaine, celery, asparagus, and assorted greens. Fresh dandelion greens are also on the menu for some fish.

Sinking it is the best way to do it so it doesn't get sucked into the filter while with smaller fruits or veggies they can be tossed in like pellets for those w/ mouths big enough.

For your fish it would probably be best to do a mixture of veggies w/ a few pieces of minced garlic (fish love garlic) in a blender, then pour it into ice-cube trays and freeze it into little portions. Lots of recipes for making your fish foods and how-to, the choice is yours

I just have one common pleco. I have 6 glo-tetras and 6 barbs (2 red-glo tiger, 2 regular tiger, and 2 green barbs). Thank you for the tip about raw zucchini in a heated tank. My tank is heated and I blanched the zucchini last night before giving it to them. A few hours later it was pretty much mush. But they ate the whole piece except for the skin. Apparently my pleco is one who doesn't like the green lol. Next time, I'm giving it to them raw. I'd like to try banana but I just cycled my tank. So, I guess I will have to wait until next weekend.

I'm liking this new found hobby immensely! I want to learn all that I can and do everything right so I really appreciate the tips. I'm supper excited tonight because two pairs of my glofish are spawning. :)

Oh yeah, I wanted to ask you; are loaches community fish? Would it be wise to have one or two of them in my tank? I think they're really cool looking.

What size is your tank? "common" plecos can get 10+ inches. There are lots of cool loaches ;) but most are social & need to be kept in groups of at least 5 or 6, more is better.

Yeah that's what I was wondering. I believe my tank is either 25 or 30 gallons. It was given to me (tank, stand, accessories, filter, heater, water testing kit EVERYTHING). How does one determine gallon size by tank measurements?

An online calculator just determined my tank is 28.8 U.S. gallons.
