does anyone feed their pond goldfish? i have a newly setup 90 gal outdoor pond with 6 goldfish. i've been feeding the goldfish sparingly, because i don't know if they'd be fine without it.... thanks for any replies.

We feed ours mostly daily... Regular Goldfish pellets, the floating kind is ok...

They might starve without it. Our pond is not that big.

The first pic is an older shot. It's more grown-in now...
I need to get more pics of it...

Goldfish do not need to be fed in their pond. I only feed mine when I want to count how many are still alive as many of them get eaten by local wildlife or are sacrificed in the filter because of my dad's lack of care. :( But they will eat any floating plants and algae that's in your pond, I've never had any die of starvation and if you check out my link to my pond site, you'll see that they are pretty big considering they've grown about 2" each in the past 2 months!!!!

Our pond is small, so we 'have' to feed them. The goldfish we have are big! I didn't think they would grow so large - so feeding is necessary - IMO.

I could see that a large pond could sustain some fish without feedings too.

My pond isn't very big, it's pretty shallow.. like less than a foot deep and probably 6 x 4 feet. They have been growing really fast, all of them were about 2 inches when I got them. Now most are 4 to 6 inches. They really love to eat my floaters tho! Nibbling little critters that they are!

Goldfish do not need to be fed below a certain temp - I want to say 50F. But they need a more balanced diet than plants and algae. It could be that the ones that fell victim to local wildlife or the filter did so because they were not strong enough to resist. Invest in a good balanced flake or pellet food. You can supplement with fruits and veggies too:
