These are the "millions". I got a good 20 of them. I'm going to give most to a friend with a much bigger concrete tank in his garden, to control mosquitos too.
Are these wild guppies? They are same size as my danios. Can I / Should I keep a few in my main tank?
Yep, those are wild guppies. I know they look nothing like the guppies we find in lfs, but the ones in lfs have been selectively bred and that usually includes inbreeding, which can cause some difference in appearance. But you diffinately have some well off wild guppies. Very hardy fish and interesting to keep.
They are very shy. I spent half an hour trying to get them out of their hiding with fish food, larva but as soon as i approach, they would disapear. I ended up using brute force, draging the net through the water faster than they can swim. Ofcourse, this brought me not just fish but small stones, algae and a lot of muck. I had to then remove them one by one from the net by hand. Some of them even jumped out of the net. They are very fast. I now have a 10g tank full of them and I can see them moving about from a distance but as soon as I get close, its hard to spot a single one. I've also got a single elodea plant that has half filled the tank. I dont dare put it in the main tank as its too full of foreign substances. I did clean it from snails and a lot of tangled debris but it still looks pretty dirty.
The fish will be alright after a bit, most seldom have encounters with people and for them, being caught up and placed somewhere unfamiliar is somewhat terrifying for them.
I wouldn't even consider taking that plant out and putting it in another tank either, no doubt something nasty is bound to come from it.
I got the plant in the same stream as the fish. Infact, I removed the plant from the stream to eliminate a hiding place. All the fish were hiding under it.
Well, least you won't have to worry about the wild guppies then, no doubt their immune systems are high and healthy. Though, just curious, but does the stream often get visited?
