i had a nitrate, ammo spike ammo was about 1 nitrates were at about 20-30 all fish are fine i have donw water changes for 3 days now and put new carbon packs in the filters

the fish

3 bolivian rams
2 GBR
5 bleeding heart
5 assorted cory
9 rummynose
1 common pleco (6-8 inches)
3 tiger barbs
2 white skirt tetras

What size is the tank? What are your levels of ammonia and nitrites? If you are feeding that way, you may have to do that every other day and vacuum any leftovers.

hmm maybe this new plant i have is non aquatic and rotting? the best picture i have is really blurry i dont know if its worth it ill see. it looks like a red lugwiga (spelling?) but its not i dont think

Wow. I practically starve my fish compared to that. They get fed every couple of days with just enough food for them to finish within a minute or so. And the bloodworms only make an appearance every week at best.

The only people who appreciate such frequent fish feedings are the companies who make the food, and the plants, algae, snails and bacteria that feast on the waste that comes out of an overfed fish's system.

You don't feed your fish at least once per day? I give them enough food which is gone in 3-5 minutes once or I feed them twice and it's gone pretty quickly. Any waste that results from this I deem as normal since every living being needs to burn some waste and that is the way it is. I don't know how big the feeding cube is but if the food lingers there for more than 10 minutes then perhaps that's too much food, especially since they are also being fed again.

Don't forget that fish are cold blooded so they don't need the excess of calories to keep their core temp up like humans and mamals do. Fish can eat every other day and live long healthy lives.

I generally feed 6 days a week, just enough for the food to disapear in 1 minute (with a few stray pieces here and there which probably get dealt with later on). I assume that I am overfeeding as well but allow for that with larger water changes.

how and when you feed your fish is also dependant on the species you keep.
I keep Discus and Angelfish. they are in water 82-84 F and get fed atleast once per day.
discus are foragers and as a result should be fed several small feedings per day..it's their nature to forage for food.
also in warm water their metabolism is faster than a fish in cooler water.if you keep breeders they need food to keep pace with their needs as the spawn. so they to get daily feedings spiked with higher protein foods.

one feeding a day is all any of my tanks get...then they usually get bloodworms once a week on water change day as a treat for me bothering them ;)

wow, I feed mine 2 times a day crisps, and pellet. never any hits the bottom, and my fish are so happy. never lost one ! ( one got eaten though LOL! ) I do a gravel vac once a week, and my tank is clear.
