Has anyone ever mixed female plakats with regular female bettas? is the massive size difference going to cause serious problems? I would love to add a few plakats to my female betta clan, but since the size difference is so vast, I'm afraid of the regular bettas dieing from attack.

Anyone mixed the 2 or have any practical experience with plakats?

I've had experience with a female plakat sorority, but I have never mixed them with other betta species.
As always I think it would very much depend on the individual betta, but the size difference can always cause issues in aggressive species. I think it could be done in the right circumstances.

I'm a little confused by your tank setup listed. Do you only have 3 females in your 39 gallon?

Plakats are waaay more aggressive than any of the "normal" fancy types. You can be almost guarenteed the Plakats will smash the others to claim dominence...then likely smash each other as well... Although, lime_smash is correct, in that it always depends on the individual fish...

I personally wouldn't mix them, though.

what is your experience with the plakats? did you commute them with other fish? only had 1? details....

i currently have 2 plakat females in with 2 common females and havent noticed any real problems. it hasnt been very long, about 2-3 weeks. i keep their tank planted, and they are the only fish in the tank.

how big is your tank? was there a fight at the beginning for alpha? which betta entered the tank first? pictures!??!

its a 5.5 nano tank, kinda small for the group, but its what i had. there is definatly a chain of command between the girls, but its never violent. the most i ever see it some flaring and showing off. nobodys fins are nipped, nobody jumps out. Ill try to get some pics up

If you have betta splendens, size should not be an issue at all...

Plakats are more aggressive than the other strains of betta splendens, and WILL fight more when introduced to a new tank. However after a couple of weeks, nothing should be out of the ordinary besides the occasional food related dispute. In fact, just because plakats rank higher in betta social hierarchies does not mean that they should be ommitted from female tanks- they may provide structural stability through holding the "alpha" title, because nobobdy wants to mess with a plakat
