Female betta tankmates?

Yes a small heater is advisable.

Also, female Bettas are definately NOT going to even look at your Bristlenose, lol. They would love to eat baby shrimp, but seriously those girls won't bother anyone. Even a male wouldn't bother pestering any type of catfish. That's been my experience anyway. The only fish that Betta's usually enjoy harassing really are live bearers like Platies because they are of a similar size and very bright colors so Betta's will usually flare up at them and scare them away, but I have never seen any Betta nip fins of another species, only other Bettas if they get the chance.

That's good to know. Even though I said I'm just gonna leave the betta out, deep down inside, I still really want it lol Maybe I can keep shrimp in another tank. Would female bettas bother CPDs? I'm not sure whether or not they're considered "bright." They definitely aren't on par with the betta size-wise.

The bettas would probably be way too slow to catch up with the danios. As for the betta, you have a rare opportunity to import from thailand for a fraction of the costs, so why not? Honestly though, the plakats I got from Thailand were incredibly healthy and much more 'lively' than any betta I've ever kept, but I'd never do it again. The shipping costs and dealing with a transshipper were major headaches. I'm curious why your friend doesn't buy from american breeders instead? Most of their stock are from Thai lines and there's much less complications overall.

Shipping from Thailand to the transhipper is apparently only $5. As for the transhipper, there is one that is local in the NYC area and he said I could pick up the fish from him instead of having them shipped.

My friend has got his eyes set on this betta that he found on aquabid. I myself am also eying some bettas from that seller as well, specifically the platinum ones. My knowledge on breeders aren't that large and I mainly rely on forums and aquabid. If there are any good American betta breeders, please point them this way :)

I sent you a PM of where you can contact some breeders in the U.S.

I've heard of that transshipper in NY, but didn't actually know he was in NYC. I live in NJ, so if he allows pickups that might be a good excuse for me to order from thailand again in the future. haha

I kept 6 pairs of Bettas about 36 years ago and the females were very social fish when they were in tanks separated from the males. No issues with fin nipping or chasing. They were sometimes chased by my red-tailed black shark but no real damage was caused by him.

Good to know. Now I'm really positive I wanna add the female betta in. Those platinum ones look too gorgeous :D

Agreed on the heater! But females can certainly vary in aggressiveness. I have three of them, all tried with various tankmates. I put the first one in a 20g long with 5 otos; she chased them incessantly and definitely nipped the caudal fins on two or three of them. The second one went into a 6g with my lovely adult ramshorn and promptly ate both its antenna; she continued trying to eat the entire snail (which was as large as she was). Both of those girls are currently serving solitary in the 6g (divided for them, of course). My third female is now in the 20g with harlequin rasboras, which she chased at first but never bit. She seemed more annoyed/startled by them than truly aggressive and has settled down beautifully. I think she'll be fine as I continue to stock that tank. :)

I don't want to discourage you; I love that you want a betta female in your tank! Just want you to know that it is a bit of a gamble. Two things that could help to reduce the likelihood of aggression/nipping: Get the youngest female you can, and add her to the tank after all the other residents are in place. She should feel like the intruder who needs to find her place, not the matriarch defending her realm. (FYI, I've read that female plakats are more aggressive than other types and may be unsuitable for community tanks; mine are all veiltails so I don't know that from experience.)

Good luck — and share some pics of your set-up, and your new girl when you get her!

I'm getting a mustard gas hmpk today for my 40g breeder. Current stock is 1 bn pleco, 6 emerald green corys, 6 albino corys, 3 gw killies. Female bettas do MUCH better than males, particularly in the community setting. I'd never toss a male in a community tank lol.
