Female betta with white "edging"- fin rot?

Today, after doing a water change in my female betta's tank, I plugged the filter back in and it choked and died. (It is less than a week old......)

That was a few hours ago. I came back and Hera was hiding underneath something. I got her to come out and all of her fins have a fine, slightly stringy white edging. Tail, top, bottom, sides...

She had NO physical signs of illness prior to right now. She has been in this tank for less than a week and has been off and on eating, so I thought she was just being finicky from the move. (She will chew the pellet and spit it out multiple times. Usually she is a shark.) Her color is really good right now, no paleness or stripes. She gets very happy and active when she sees me.

I can get a picture if it's necessary.

I've helped my friend treat fin rot before, but the tank's filter broke today. It was a whisper (I hate whispers but it came with the kit) and I may contact tetra or go back to the pet store and try to get a credit for a week-old filter dying. I don't know what to do.... Thank you for any input.

You can take the filter apart until you can see the impeller. Use a wooden skewer or something similar and try to turn the impeller a couple of times and then plug it in and see if it starts. I have to do that to my whisper any time the electricity goes off. Sounds complicated but it is pretty easy. I don't know about the betta though. So far I have been lucky with mine and had no problems. *knocks on wood* Most important thing is pristine water, do a lot of water changes using a water conditioner.

What type of whisper is it? Even the internal ones are fairly easy to get the impeller out of for cleaning (had a mts stuck in mine once)

The betta does sound like it has the start of finrot.

My whisper completely died on me after only a few months. I obviously opted for a new brand (AC)...they are cheaply made IMO and you get what you pay for...

What are your water params? If it is indeed fin rot you need to keep the water as clean as possible. QTing is always a good choice. You can keep a closer eye on the progress and the water quality.

Thank you. The whisper isn't the usual kind... I've had the normal internal kind, and I could get to the impellor... but this is the one I have for this tank http://www.aquahobby.com/products/e_whispermicro.php

For fin rot, I have Jungle Fungus Clear which treats it in doses of 10 gallons and Marcryn-Two which would be easier to cut down to 5 gallons. However, if I start treatment today it will be without filtration.

Anyone have any ideas for an appropriate filter for a 5 gallon tank? I will post this in the equipment forum as well.

AC 20. Maybe a little too much flow but it's adjustable.

Without a filter monitor your params VERY closely and do water changes when needed to keep ammonia/nitrite at a minimum.

I wouldn't be dosing any meds at this point. Fin rot will clear up easily with clean water alone. I see no need to put any unnecessary stress on the fish with the meds.

Just to tell you I have 2 of those in my crab tank. All you do is turn it upside down, take the 2 little screws out of bottom and the bottom which encloses the motor will come right off and you can see the impeller. I agree that I like my aquaclear more but if this one is just stuck you can unstick it and keep it as an emergency backup. IMO
