Dumb Question, but do the Juvie Females have the gill plate colors...

If so, might have to look a little closer at patASmart to get Jack and Bob some companionship....

All my small Juv have blue on their sides. As they grow they loose it and get the blue on the gill plates or keep it and get more to show their male colors. It's very hard to sex a juv Dempsey. I can't do it. Even their body shapes are the same. They might even be to small to look for the venting.

thats what mine looks like too, during a recent move noone would house him b/c he likes to bite...

last pic is of him in his previous home, someone had him in a 12G eclipse system.. his face has come out some so he's prolly round 13.5inch maybe 14
