Last week I got a female dwarf gourami for my 10 gallon tank. She's doing great and seems to love her new home. I heard that dwarf gourami's like floating plants, what kind of floating plants would you guys recommend? I was hoping to use some silk plants if I could. I don't have much luck with many real plants. The only real plants I have in the tank now are an anubis, java ferm and a japanese moss ball. I'm hoping to get a male dwarf gourami soon but I'm going to wait until I get a few more plants in the tank.
This is my plan for stocking my 10 gallon:
one female dwarf gourami (already have)
6 dwarf corys (already have)
one male dwarf gourami (plan on getting)

Will this stocking plan work for a 10 gallon tank? Would this be overstocking the tank?

Here are some picture of my female dwarf gourami: (sorry if the pictures aren't very good. She doesn't stay still long enough to get a good picture of her lol).

If you plan on getting an male, please get another female as well. Male gouramis can bug the world out of females and trios (MFF) do much better. In regards to floating plants -- any red root floaters, duckweed, Amazon frogbit, water lettuce, and salvinia and/or azolla if you can find it local. :) Good luck!

If 3 dwarf gourami's won't overstock my tank then I'll get 1 male and another female. I don't know if I can get any float plants in the pet stores near me. I'll just have to make due with silk plants for now. Do I have to worry about them breeding a lot? I don't have much experience with dwarf gourami's so sorry for all the questions. I hope I can get another female dwarf gourami. The store I work at don't get in female dwarf gourami's in very often. They usually come in with the males by mistake.

My male dwarf gourami likes riccia fluitans, and I also have java moss attached to a cork so that it floats. If you can't find any floating plants, the java moss approach may help until you do.

He hooked the java moss into the riccia to construct this massive block of plants to work with, he's also woven in some loose stem plants he found.

Gourami's like floating plants because they use them to make bubble nests, with which they deposit their eggs into. If you have no luck with live plants, then use silk, the fish won't know the difference but will appreciate the security of having the fake leaves floating at the top. I agree, male Gourami's can but the crap out of the females, so make sure you have plenty of hiding places for the females. Having seen a pic of your tank, the reason your plants are not doing well is because you have only pebbbles for the substrate. For plants to thrive, you need better substrate such as flourite (there are others as well) to provide nutrients for the roots, pebbles don't quite cut it. You also need to fertilize the water and make sure you have 8 hours of light - moderately bright.

I'll get more silk plants before I get the male gourami. I reccently got another female gourami for the tank. I wanted to make sure she gets use to the tank and I want to get more plants before I get the male just yet. Both of the female gourami's are doing good. The one female is starting to get more filled out. I'll probably wait about 2 weeks before I get the male.
Thanks for the advice NegativeLogic and ODPILOT.

I've had luck with java fern, java moss and anubis before. I want to get more java fern and maybe one or two more anubis plants.

Pretty...

I would definitely get another female if you're planning on adding a male to the tank because he will pester the heck out of her :nilly: and you don't want her so stressed that she gets sick! She is lovely by the way!! Gouramis are wonderful fish!!

Is your Java Fern planted? It would probably do better tied down to a rock or driftwood. I don't think that 4 Dwarf Gouramis in a 10 g. is overcrowded so I agree with getting another female.

so two females and one male gourami would be ok in a 10 gallon? Thanks for saying my female gourami is lovely tonergirl. Right now I have 2 females in the 10 gallon. I'll get a male in a few weeks. Want to make sure the females get adjusted to the tank and get more plants for the tank.

So the final stocking plan is:
2 female dwarf gourami's (already have)
6 dwarf cories (already have)
3 or 4 snails (already have)
1 male dwarf gourami (Plan on getting one soon)
