I've noticed my female swordtail acting a little odd lately. For the past two days I've noticed her:

1. Swimming in one place for long periods of time. Not necessarily at the bottom. At times at the top of the tank, at times in the middle of the tank, and at times at the bottom of the tank. Usually she hides behind a rock or driftwood or just near the back of the tank.

2. I will find her on the gravel. Not rubbing herself against it, but just resting on it. Her fins are moving (not her tail) but she's breathing normally (I think).

How do you know if a fish is gasping for air? Will it open its mouth at it breathes in? Just right now, she decided to swim around a rock and then went back behind it where she likes to "swim" by herself. It's just weird.

I also noticed that today when I fed the fish, she didn't eat. She wasn't interested in the food. I'm just a bit concerned. I use to have a zucchini in the tank, but today it was all gone. Could she have eaten the left over zucchini that my oto's left behind?

I forgot to mention that my parameters are:

Ammo 0
Trites 0
Trates 10
pH ~7.9
Temp 78*F

Ah well, forget it. She's dead.

I'm sorry too.

What is going on with swords lately? My female died a week after having fry - she gasped at the surface, didn't eat and then hid in a rock an died. Now my male sword is just hanging at the bottom, not moving and not eating either! But he has no signs of any treatable disease so I can't help him!

maybe start a thread melissa - what's your ammonia, nitrite, nirate, size tank and inhabitants ?
