Okay, so I've been dosing my tank with Flourish for about a week or so, and today I picked up Flourish Excel as a CO2 supplement. The other I need to get is Potassium. The progress of my plant growth is as follows.

Anubias= Leaves are looking better, older ones not dying off as quickly, so the ferts must be working. Also pulled the whole plant up above the gravel a bit to allow it to grow 'legs', and to avoid damage to leaves by decor or displaced gravel.

Anacharis= Took a while to settle in from being planted and is finally starting to grow upward, but slowly. Some stems are still floating.

Crypt. Wenditii= They are popping up out of the gravel bed everyday, at slightly faster rate. Looking goodm as far as coloratation and growth.

Hornwart= Faster growth. It has almost covered the surface of the water, but not entirely. Bright green, the fish love weeving in and out of it, sleeping in it too, I think.

Java Ferns= Leaves bright green, new leaves especially. Slow growth mainly, but seeing difference since adding ferts. Smaller plants seem to be growing a bit faster in shade. I might try placing the larger ferns in shade too...

Java Moss= Not much is in the tank, but it is creeping around in its small masses. It should fill in leftover spots once the rest of the plants have filled in.

Last part of this post is about a new filter I'd like to get and its maintenance.
I was looking into getting the Eheim 2013 canister filter for my tank, which is a 55g. I was wondering if this size was adequate enough for this size tank and what kind of maintenance this kind of filter requires, as I've never had a canister type. Thanx in advance.

Update

I did a water change last night and added both ferts this morning. I did something stupid last night though, I left one of the java ferns out of water too long. It was attached to a rock that I was planning to move. Before I knew the timehad passed, it has dryed and shriveled a little. It also seems to have released its grip on the rock it was on. I placed it back in water immediately, andthis morning it looked a little better, still green, just truamatized, the poor thing.

Besides that, I built a cave out of rocks I have for the redtail shark I plan to get soon, but I'd like to get the new filter before. I'm thinking of keeping some of the swordtail fry to adulthood for my tank. Their charm has weakened me once again... :p:

Anyway, I mainly just need the above canister filter questions aswered, as I've never had one before.

The 2013 is rated for 390 liters an hour (that's roughly 100 gallons/hour). This might be a little on the low side for your 55g. Many like to turn the volume over 10 times per hour. So for a 55g, 550 gallons/hour. I have a Rena Filstar XP3 on my 55g planted tank and it performs great. Its rated for 300 gallons/hour. For planted tanks I don't particularly buy into the 10x turnover but the 100 gallons/hour rating of the 2013 may not be enough.

My eheim 2213 does quite well on my 55 gallon. I use an aquaclear 300 as well but its not necesary. A heavily planted tank needs less filtration.

Scott - the 10x turnover is for HOBs, which are significatly less efficient than canisters, especially Eheims. So 10x fitration by good canisters is way overfiltration (although I do some of of that).

But I do think that a 2213 (2013 was many years ago, several changes from that model, the biggest being impeller design) is a bit small for a 55. I'd suggest moving up to a 2215 and adding a FilterMaxIII prefilter to it to capture large particulates for weeky rinsing - means less canister opening and lower nitrate in the tank.
