fertilizing

i have 5 tanks of assorted sizes that all have plants in them. I add fert to the water column in all those tanks but nothing in the substrate. my question is, do i need to be dosing the substrate? I have diy c02 set ups on all the tanks already. I have discus in one of the planed tanks so i want to use something that wont bother my fish if i need to.

a little of everything. swords, cambomba, anubis, val, most of them i dont even know what they are. I just bought them from the lfs(plural).

Semi General answer----
Most stem plants, get most of their nutrients from the water. Swords are heavy root feeders, slower grow and low light plants==do not really care
