Few questions about puffers...

1. I have a fully cycled freshwater tank already set up, i was wondering if i couuld just convert the water to brackish for a puffer fish without losing the beneficial bacteria??

2. What is the salt/gallons of water ratio for a figure 8 puffer?

3. How big do figure 8 puffers get?

4. Any possible tankmates??

Thanks a bunch!!!

1. No, is different kind of bacteria. You would need to recycle if you did that
2. I generally use 1 cup per 10 gallons and that would be fine for my guys. Depends on what kind of salt you use. Be sure to use marine salt like Instant Ocean.
3. Fig's will get ~3-4 inches some say up to 6 but I say 3-4.
4. Yes depending on what size tank.

1. He could slowly recycle it w/o killing ALL the beneficial bacteria by raising the SG by .002 per week.

2. Figure 8's need 1.005-1.008 SG (SG is specific gravity)

3. Figure 8's get to 3 inches, if youre lucky, 4 inches.

4. Depending on the size, i'll just name a few... knight gobies, bumblebee gobies, dragon gobies, other figure 8's, freshwater flounders (yes, it can work)... i'll name more later

SG is specific gravity which measures the amount of salt concentration in the water. You measure it with a hydrometer which can be purchased at any fish store that sells marine products. Just make sure which ever one that you buy shows the low end (some only got to 1.018). Just make sure it goes to 1.000. Generally you just put the water in the hydrometer and the float will "float" up to the level of salt. Anyway, hope this helps and good luck!

I would not suggest the floating type of hydrometer, as they are calculated for much lower temps than we keep our tanks at. The fill-up types are best. I actually use a refractometer.
