Fighting platys

The guppy in my avatar isn't mine FWIW. Do a yahoo image search on fancy guppy, and that pic is one of the top 10 I think. lol

I've only ever had one male platy, and he died in a fishless cycle catastrophee. I keep females exclusively (other than the guppy). As far as I know, platies are generally peaceful unless it is a bunch of males and only a couple females. All males is fine, and a 3:1 female to male ratio is good if you mix. This situation sounds more like one of either size difference or overcrowding or just bad luck and a pissy platy. The tank is about fully stocked. Those algae eaters that were labeled as golden loaches may well be some kind of loach. Shops that don't know if they have SAEs or CAEs or whatever usually just put "algae eaters" and don't actually mislabel them as a loach since a loach would be much more expensive and would be more of a specialty fish to order. Not saying anything definitive without a pic or anything. Just saying I've never heard of that kind of mix up.

thats one of them. they look really like any other pics of caes i've seen, just golden. they're pretty cool.
my bf has some weather loaches in his 65gal, they look nothing like my guys. they're kinda ugly
maybe i wont get any more platys so, just plants when i can, and another adf, i have to get a little boyfriend for my nigella(frog), i got the tank for adfs in the 1st place, theyre pretty hard to get around here though so got some fishies to keep her company:)
 
Jentry nerdyguy is right your tank is pretty well stocked and if you plan on letting your fish have fry then maybe only get a couple of female guppies to go wth your male and if it was me I would set up another tank in which to put any babies where they can grow without being harassed. In my experience fry grow much faster in a tank by themselves rather than having to compete with adult fish in a community tank. Fry may be tiny but it is surprising how quickly they add to the bioload. Plenty of plants are a must in a community tank if you want your fry to survive too and not get eaten.
My tank is 50 gallons, 4 foot long.

I have never heard of platies interbreeding with guppies but I know they do interbreed with swordtails.
 
I would recommend getting a grow-out tank for the fry for when your female platy gives birth, one of 20g capacity planted with loads of java moss and filtered by a sponge filter will work.
 
yup, the algae eater looks like an albino ("golden") chinese algae eater. i myself have 2 golden dojo loaches, that are dojo loaches but a type of albino. i prefer them to the regular ones because they're prettier. i think in temperament, the two should be the same, so watch out! CAE's will get big and aggressive, and actually more omnivorous than herbivorous (e.g. eat smaller fish).
 
well that's never good to hear!! you really should be given this information when you're buying them! they were in tanks with community fish....in the community fish section so you'd kinda presume that it's a good idea. they certainly are keeping my bogwood spotless anyway, and they're cool! if they get too big i'll just give them to my bf, he has a 4ft tank too.
lol, gettin a 20 gal tank just for baby fish seems a bit extreme, if i had loadsa extra money it would be nice alright, but thats even bigger than the one i have now! think il just hold off on the females and just get plants for the lil guy to hide.
i named one of the platies mickey....i didn't actually realise they were called mickey mouse platies, thought i was being all clever:P
 
i probably would have just gotten one instead of two. they weren't even calling them caes in the store. I just put in 3 live plants and my bf took the castle out of his tank and gave it to me so they're too busy suckin on their new house right now to be fighting:)
