Figure 8 Puffer

Well.... I think I have made my decision. Based on what's best for the fish, my financial ability and all things considered, I am not going to buy the f8 and attempt to maintain a brackish tank at this point.

This was furthured by the fact that my lfs said they would be happy to order some dwarf puffers for me. I think for now this will be a better match for the equipment I currently have.

I have decided to go with live plants and will post some pictures as this progresses.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions

I realize you've already made a decision, but for future reference, I thought I'd add a bit about refractometers/hydrometers. I read a post, I think on The Puffer Forum, regarding the differences between hydrometers (swing arm style) versus refractometers. The consensus was that the refractometers are more accurate, but the swing arm hydrometers do a very good job as well and are much cheaper. If I had the money to spend and nothing else I needed, I think I would spring for a refractometer, but I have an Instant Ocean swing arm hydrometer that works great for me. Just remember to rinse with freshwater before and after use. It was only $11 and goes down to 1.000. I don't see the need for a refractometer for light brackish setups; any shift in SG is likely not going to be too big a deal.

For your earlier question about adding salt, no. You should always premix the salt in a bucket (I like rubermaid tubs) with freshwater before adding it to the tank. Make sure ALL the salt is mixed in. Some even like to leave it overnight with a powerhead to make sure it's all at the right temp and SG. I don't think it's necessary for brackish, though. Always check the SG since the marine salt mixes will have some variation, even between days using the same bag! This is because of the humidity of the air and the possible loss of trace elements, etc.

But good luck with the DPs! Do read up about them on The Puffer Forum.
