Figure 8 puffers fresh or brackish?

How was the tank cycled? How big is the tank?

10g tank...cycled the tank just for a week... what i did was put a lil fish food into the tank and let the lights (12 hrs) and filter run everyday... i kept on measuring the ph, gH and kH as well... but that doesnt help my dead fish... well, some says probably because of infected with internal bacteria... now left 1 but he's not eating much these days... he still swim left right the tank non stop for ver long time. then he will rest on the ground... then awhile later he will swim all around the tank... then rest, then he goes again and again the same process... but he disregard all the bloodworm i fed him and ghost shrimp too... i have no clue what else he wanna eat.. snail will be quite tough to find here.. we have this cone shape snail which is very big but it's a garden snail.. i dont think that's appropriate for him, right? anyone's fig.8 with such behaviour? please share..

What is the ammonia and nitrite levels of the tank? If you don't know I would be doing daily water changes to help this guy out. If you have a test kit then I would be changing the water if ammonia got above 1ppm and nitrite above 0.25 ppm. If you have no test kit then I would be doing daily 50 water changes, matching the change water with the tank water as best as you can.

As for snails, rams horn and pond snails are the best. Most freshwater ponds and brackish streams have snails in them. You should be able to fidn some small ones somewhere and then q-tank them for a bit and breed them.

Mosquito larva are also a great food choice in the early stages to get the puffer eating.

I have seen them described as both. Also will a little extra aquarium salt make my tank brackish and would that hurt my other fish? What are these figure 8 puffers like? I have read that they can be kept in a comminity tank as long as there are no long finned fish in there to. If anyone could share their experiance that would be great.

Thanks
:)

I have had a Figure 8 puffer in my ten gallon community aquarium with no problems, the other fish are 2 black skirt tetras and two bleeding heart tetras. When I first got him he was a little fin nipper but i put him in one of those breeder nets for a few days and he came out a changed fish. Has not bothered any since.

threejjj - expect a short, stunted life for the puffer. F-8s can live to the mid- to upper teens when properly housed and fed. Otherwise they are short-lived and prone to diseases. An over-crowded FW tank is poor aquarium practice for these fish.

This above practice will probably just start out a cycle. You are testing for the wrong things. I would assume your puffers are subcumming to nitrIte/ammonia poisoning, from an uncycled, overcrowded tank.

What? SG of water can go down BELOW 1.000??? I thought 1.000 was the bottom line and it was pure fresh water!

I just think s/he hasn't added enough salt to go higher than 1.000.
