Some places say up to 3 inches, others say up to 8!? Anyone have any experience?

The one that I had was almost 3" and I had it for just over a year, more like a year and a half. I bought it when it was the size of a dime. Not knowing how long they live... it was almost full grown in that time. Boy, was it a food hog. It would try to stuff as much food in its belly as it could before the other fish could get to it. It would see me walking over to the tank with the cup of food and start jumping trying to get the food before it would hit the water. I didn't have any problems with it being aggressive or mean. It was the smallest fish in my tank.

I have never seen a large F-8 and have serious doubts that such exist. The largest ID'd specimen in any taxononmic collection is 8 cm. Fish larger than that are likely incorrectly ID'd.

I believe you are right. 3.14" = 8cm. So 3" - 4" <--at the largest, would be the max size.
Unless there has been some cross breeding or incorrect ID.
The later would be the first and best explanation, of seeing a "figure 8 puffer" over 3" to 4".

The closest would be the Ceylon Puffer similar markings, but missing the dark blue or black eye spots.

The eye spots on mine when I first got it were a very dark bluish black.
