You all knew it, we've now upgraded our 5 gallon to a 20 gallon - should have listened to you all in the beginning!

We bought the kit at Wal-Mart and it has an "Aqua-Tech Power filter" model 10/20. Should I add another filter to help maximize filtration? I have a filter from about 9 or 10 years ago that works but I don't think they make that brand any more. I think it's a Neptune Ultra-Flo 100 mini. I had it in my 10 gallon years ago. Problem is I don't remember if it was rated for just a 10 gallon tank. Knowing me it was probably overkill for the 10 gallon, I always tend to go a little overboard.

This time we're trying the fishless cycle.

thanks for your help!!

As long as you have the room and the filter works I say go for it. If need be you can use an aquarium sponge as a filter cartridge in the older filter.

I can still get the cartridges for the older filter so I think I'll just add it. Wouldn't hurt to have extra filtration, right? even if it's not rated for a 20 gallon but it could be because I can't find anything on it anymore.

Thanks so much!!

I vote for over filtration provided the flow doesn't become a problem for the fish you are maintaining. Also, any manufacturers claims are in actuality about 50% of their stated capabilities. Read their labels. The flow/capacity is driven from ideal conditions without media installed.
