How does the carbon in the filter affect planted tanks? Is it bad to keep it in there?

I don't think so but I'm no expert. Carbon pulls some of the dissolved materials out of the water.

After a month, the carbon is no longer active and it works as a good biological filter as it has plenty of surface area. I leave mine in my cannister and will leave it there until it falls apart.
