What would be a good filter choice for a 150G to 185G tank? I am thinking of moving up from my 55G but I only have experience with hang on back style filters.

I am budgeting and planning for a 125 gallon tank myself at the moment and am looking at 2 Rena Filstar XP3s, as Raskolnikov suggested. You could still use two or three larger HOBs on a larger tank if you wished to, I am going with a planted tank though so canister is more appealing. Plus, I have other tanks in the house and the extra media chambers for seeding is too good to pass up.

I have Fluval 404's and Rena Xp2's. From using both of these, I like the Rena series MUCH better. Granted my 404 is older, it just seems difficult to work with (getting the hose assembly unattached and starting it from stopped). The Rena, while manually primed, I think is much easier to work with. However, both are good filters.

The rena will ofter more setup options for the output which I like as well.

Two xp3 will work great

Just my thoughts.

Good luck
