Okay, so I'm coming up to my first filter cleaning, and I want to make sure I do it right. Is this the correct process?
Fill a bucket with water from the tank. Take out all the media from the filters. Give the sponges a couple of good shakes a squeezes in the water. Shake the bagged filter media in the water to knock out loose junk. Clean out the intake pipe and make sure that the impeller is not clogged.
Anything else?
I know not to use sink water at all, or try to keep things too clean.

I usually just rinse my sponges in tap water and rinse my bagged media with tank water.

sounds good, use clean brushes if you are going to brush the tubes to avoid getting any detergent in there. also remember to avoid breaking any important parts.

also, dont forget to taste the water you shook your filter media in. if it tastes like a dark bitter beer you are all set to go.

Make sure that there are no shrimp or baby fishes in the filter! I didn't look and I lost a bunch of shrimp down the drain. I was so upset.
