Do you just pull it out of your HOB filter and let your water get full of junk when you change it? Or can I turn the filter off, remove it, wash it out and replace with new floss?

My flow has slowed down, and I'm pretty sure it's due to the floss being clogged. I don't want to release all the junk and just have it clog right back up again.

Dont throw it away...you should get SEVERAL uses out of a filter floss. I rinse them out durring every water change...ive probably got about 20 water changes or so on my filters i have now. I understand your question, hes saying if you pull them out while the filter is on, will anything that is left over in the HOB fall into the tank. I just unplug mine before i take out the floss, then plug it back in when i put the floss back in. Sometimes there is crap that remains in the assembly, usually plant leaves/particles and i just try to fish them out as best as possible.

Yes, you can turn your filter off to clean.

Jeffro426 is right, but I hate the feel of used slimy filter floss. You could throw it out and replace the floss but I would keep a good pinch to seed the new floss. If you have nothing else but floss in your filter, I would get a sponge to fill half the filter. That way you can throw out your floss and just rinse out the sponge in old or treated aquarium water and put it back in to do its job. (The sponges just don't seem to feel as 'icky' to me.)

I can't stand cleaning floss. I won't use it except as a disposable medium, so I rarely use it. Sponges cut to fit the filter are a much better solution, IMO.

Well when I changed the cartridges before, alot of stuff kinda floats behind the cartridge, or stays at the bottom of the filter well. So when I pulled it out, everything that wasn't trapped by the cartridge made it's way into the tank.

I was just assuming that floss would do the same... I'll just unplug it, change, and replace. Thanks guys :D
