Many of you on the forum have mentioned using Floss instead on Filter Pads in Cannister filters. This Floss can be purchased at certain Hobby Stores or possibly big box stores.

My questions:

What is the actual make-up of this Floss?
Any name brands which you use?

its polyester fiber (pillow stuffing). I buy the huges bags from walmart craft section simply labeled poly-fill pillow stuffing, its about $3

Either Walmart or Hobby Lobby sell the stuff bulk much cheaper than fish stores.

Also, another advantage to the material is it's not a very efficient biological filter because the fibers aren't as condusive to bacteria growth as carbon or other substrate is. This means that when you do change it (which you should do frequently if you are going to actually use a mechanical filter), you won't disrupt your biological filter as much as a changing a bag of carbon or filter pad once a month.

I have used the stuff since before there was a Walmart. The old 5 and dimes carried it and it worked back then too. I am convinced there is almost nothing new under the sun but each generation needs to re-discover that.
