I'm thinking about starting a 50G Breeder Tank (36x18x19) for two or three 2 to 3" discus, and a schoal of rummy nose. The tank will be low tech planted, with eco complete as the substrate and probably a scape with manzanita wood.

For now I plan on running one Filstar XP2 as the primary filter and would like to search for a backup filter. Would an AC 70 Filter or a HOT Magnum Canister be better fit for the tank?

Which one would do a better job to maintain clean water for the discus?

Since you already have a primary filter, get a Penguin 350 or an Emperor 400 so the bio-wheels can help with your biological filtration. Plus they are great filters. :)

i love AquaClears! Never had a HOT Magnum Canister, i prefer Renas. why not get another! ;)

I am not a big bio-wheel fan. An ex had one and it just sat there, it did not spin like it was suppose to. We both had 30 gals, i had a bigger bio-load, and my stats before the weekly water change were lower with a whisper than his penguin.
