Filter for 55g, which brand to get?

I looked up all the products you guys have mentioned here at Petsmart.com and found out that I'm pretty much limited to Emperor and Penguin. They don't have Aquaclear or Rena and therefore I won't be able to pricematch these guys even if they're in store. There are LFS around here but their prices are just ridiculous. I heard a lot about Rena but the way it goes I might settle for an emperor 400.

Still haven't made up my mind yet...

Im on the Aquaclear bandwagon myself. i have 2 of them and have had no problems, and they are very quiet. I also have a Rena canister, which i also cant complain about, and the price is great on them.

with cichlids, whatever filter(or filters) you go with, make sure that the gallons per hour on your filter(s) is 8-10 times the volume of your aquarium. so a 55 gallon should have a filter system that will push 440 to 550 gallons per hour.

Dude you can print prices from any website and Petsmart will match them. I do it all the time mostly from drsfostersmith.com go find the lowest web price print it and take it to petsmart they absolutley have to price match it. Their pricematch guarantee is for ANY competerors price.

Some of the petsmarts carry the aquaclear filter series and some do not. Each store can stock according to how they think the stock will sell. That is why you will see it in one petsmart and not in another. As far as the filters go, I would go with the aquaclear if you can find it. I have them running on three of my aquariums and I could not be happier. They are very silent in thier operation and very efficient filters. That is of course if you just want a hang on back type filter. Personally, I like the idea of having two filters running on the tank such as a good hang on back filter and a good canister filter as well. As far as the canisters go, if you can afford it, go with one in the eheim series. You will love it and never look back. If not the xp series is also very good and not as expensive.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'm pretty set on Aquaclear now. Hopefully my petsmart has them. For my next 125g tank, probably a canister filter will be my first choice.
