Filter for Overstocked 10 gallon

Let's discuss cruelty when it comes to keeping the fry alive.

In the wild, the most deaths of fish happen within the first few weeks of life, while they are fry. This is why your guppies have so many, to try and ensure that at least some make it. When you take them out of that situation, the guppies still make a ton of fry, only there is nothing killing them. Which is not only unnatural, but now the fish are living in bad conditions. Now, you have way too many fish, having bad living conditions, all because you don't want to duplicate the natual settings for the fish.

My advice is simple: if you won't replicate nature as much as possible, then replicate it the least amount possible by removing everyone of one sex and sell the excess. If you don't want to allow the natural setting to happen, then make sure your fish are happening by removing what is causing your "problem".

Yea I'm going to seperae the females into the fry tank once I add the second filter, hower the tank is jsut finisheing up or as finished the mini cycle...

When these guppies are grown up they will be sold except for the ones I want, Then if I need another batch in the future I can select the male and female to breed. Although in the meantime she will likely have several more batches of fry.

I think if I was a fish I would rather live in temporary slightly lower living conditions untill sold than be killed...Just my opinion. Hell petstores often overstock their tanks I know mine does, but it is only temporary...

get a ram, that should take care of your little babies.
and for filter id say canister if youre going for the planted tanks. you can make HOB filters to not so much cause surface agitation but its still exposed to the air while being filtered. if youre gonna inject CO2 that is.

I might do a c02 DIY, same as my comunity tank which is a 20 gallon. I have a fluval 204 on that tank and love it. However I don't wanna spend the big bucks on this 10 gallon and I can get the Aquaclear 30 for $18. It would be the only cost of setting up this tank as the other components I already have. Not too $$ to dose excel either so it will likely be a combo of both. Is the aquaclear really that much worse? I could just double up and get another whisper 10i internal filter as well.. Not sure what would be a better choice but the whispers do take up alot of space.

I think my ADF's will miss the guppy fry snacks though. I beleive they did take care of a few of them. And I found a few living in my fluval 204 as well.

I agree, I'd rather live than die, but nature is a cruel place.

I would suggest you to get a Tetratec PF 150 and put the flow on medium. I bought one of these and it is great. I bought it the other day at the LFS and it said on the box $29.99 but when I got to the register it was only $14.99!!!! It works great and it is extremely quiet. It also has a Lifetime Warranty. This would be perfect for you.

A low cost option to a canister filter is a hydro sponge hooked up to a small powerhead. It will take up a little bit of room in the tank, but WILL NOT cause any surface agitation (this will keep your co2 from gassing off). It might cost a few dollars more than the hob, but will also be fry safe.

Mooman, I have been meaning to tell you that I LOVE that pic of the dog in your avatar. He looks like a real sweetie. I would never be able to get my Sheba to wear a hat like that. LOL

so here's my 0.02 ;)

if you go get an aquaclear HOB, get a good sized filter sponge and cut a hole in one side of it so you can fit it over the filter intake. at elast then you dont' have fry getting sucked into the filter. you don't want a hole all the way through the sponge, just enough to get it over the intake

Hey thanks. She (Meisha, aka "the moo") is by far the best dog on the planet. She's six years old, and except for a little white on the face looks and acts like she's two (a well behaved 2). She's only 65 lbs, which is pretty small for a full blooded lab, so people always think she's a puppy. She's a die hard steelers fan too, so getting her to wear the hat was a piece of cake
