what is this so called filter "gunk".....can i get it from a power filter that uses the carbon cartridges?

Filter gunk is the junk and fish waste that builds up in your mechanical filtration (floss or sponge). Filter media full of gunk usually means they've been up and running for awhile, and that means plenty of nitrifying bacteria.

If your filter uses mechanical filtration, you'll have filter gunk.

can I use my cartridges that have carbon in them for GUNK to start another tank? Does the media need to be carbonless? Does that make a difference?

carbon houses bacteria fairly well, and would work for trnsferring it from one tank to another
