Well, I just finished my cycle, took a little over a month. During that time I had only cleaned my Rena XP2 filter out once because I had read several places that doing it too much during the cycle would slow it down. Anyways, today I replaced 50% of my tanks water as recommended. I cleaned out the filter and upon turning it back on, a huge mass of "gunk" came spitting out of the filter inlet into the tank. It looks like flakes of algae almost like pieces of skin (gross, I know). From what I can figure it was build up in the tubing in the filter that got blown out once the pressure was returned. So, my questions are, how do I avoid this in the future? Was it just because I hadn't cleaned the filter out as much? I sure hope I am not supposed to clean the tubing out every time because that would be a huge pain. Any ideas?
