I have an Oceanic- 40 gallon hexagon tank with a Penguin BIO-Wheel Power Filter (200 50 gal). I am not really happy with the Bio wheel since the wheel is no longer spinning and it also makes a lot of noise. So I decided to invest in a Canister filter. Can you please give me any suggestions on a good canister filter? I have tetras, guppies, and zebra danios. Also, is the Eheim Filter 2217 too powerful for my system?

I guess the advice most people will give you is if you can afford an eheim, buy it. I am more thrifty (nice way of saying cheap) and would get a Rena. They are self-priming, easy to use, quiet, and do a great job. You could use an xp2 or and xp3. I don't think anyone will tell you that a filter is too powerful, you can always adjust the discharge, use a spraybar, or adjust decorations to damper the flow.

I LOVE the eheim 2217. It would keep your tank SPOTLESS. However, if you're looking at a lower price range, the XP3 is a great filter aswell.

Ok. It seems that the XP3 is great for the price. Should I get the XP2 since I only have an 40 gallon tank? The XP2 is for a 75 gallon and the XP3 is for a 175 gallon. Will the stream be too powerful for my guppies?

Don't get the xp2, it's more worth it to pay just a little, and get a bigger, better filter. Get the xp3.. If its too strong, put spray bar, or lower the flow. I love my 2 xp3's and 1 xp1 on my 60 gal.

Eheim 2217, it's only $134 at petsmart while the rena is $104. The eheim is worth the extra $30.
