filter intake placement

I have a Fluval 404 filter in my 55g planted tank. Just curious what everyone considers the proper distance to install the intake stem above the substrate.

What distance do you use?

i keep mine about 2 inchees above gravel. works perfect.

Mine are approximately centered at the back of the tank, about 3 inches above the gravel. Working fine for years.

When I first installed my Fluval, and had to cut down the intake tube, I only got it about 1 to 1 1/2 inches about the gravel. Should I move it or just let it be?

mines 5 or so inch in my 120 gal tank.
