Filter media expensive... Solutions?

Sure, I think I can find plenty of pantyhose stockings around my house. I'll try that next. See how it works.

By the way, dish washing sponges seem like they might work, but many people say they contain some chemicals, can anybody confirm that?

don't use dishwashing sponges! I used to be able to find little filter sacks that I could stuff my own media in, then bought the media in bulk. the sacks were more durable than what you normally get when you buy the premade stuff.
